Re: New Board Member Sweatt Sworn In, Assumes Position with NMB

Washington, D.C. – The National Mediation Board (NMB) is pleased to announce the arrival of new Board Member, Loren E. Sweatt. Ms. Sweatt was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 7, 2024. She was sworn in and assumed her position with the NMB on April 2, 2024.

Ms. Sweatt transitions to the Board from the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions where she most recently was a Senior Professional Staff Member.  Prior to the Senate position, Ms. Sweatt also served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration at the U.S. Department of Labor for almost four years. For 15 years, Ms. Sweatt was a Senior Policy Advisor at the Committee on Education and the Workforce in the House of Representatives.

Her experience includes all facets of labor policy. Ms. Sweatt holds a Bachelor of Arts from Texas Christian University and a Master of Business Administration from Marymount University.

The National Mediation Board (NMB) is an independent agency created by the Railway Labor Act, which governs labor management relations in the railroad and airline industries. To avoid serious disruptions to the Nation’s economy and protect the public interest, the Act imposes on carriers and their employees the duty of settling disputes through negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. The NMB, headed by three Presidential appointees, has as its chief statutory responsibilities: (1) mediation of collective bargaining disputes; (2) determination of employee representation for collective bargaining processes; and (3) administration of a grievance arbitration system.
